Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin was constructed during the historic reign of the United Kingdom’s famed Queen Victoria, who sat on the British throne from 1837 to 1901.

In 1880, local mayor Pické decided that Noordwijk should become a seaside resort destination for the wealthy, and in 1883, Pické broke ground on the highest point of the dunes in spectacular Noordwijk Beach. The stately Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin opened two years later. In 1887, the textile merchant Heinrich Tappenbeck purchased the hotel with six hectares of land. Members of the House of Orange and members of the Belgian Royal Family were regular guests, charmed by the intimate service and distinctive accommodations.

Resort competition increased along the coast, and during the 1960s, the hotel was continuously resold to a project developer who wanted to demolish the complex. Fortunately, the city council of Noordwijk rejected those plans, and the hotel was rescued by private owners. After extensive renovations, historical restorations, and modern enhancements, the Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin was reopened in 1984 by Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, the third daughter of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard.

In January 1990, tragedy struck and a large part of the hotel was structurally compromised. Once again, the Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin was lovingly restored with the highest standards of luxury and comfort. Today, the Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin consists of two parts: the Grand Hotel and the Nouvel Hotel. The Grand Hotel survived the calamity and has five floors, four of which are equipped with luxurious guestrooms. The Nouvel Hotel was built afterward and consists of 11 floors, nine of which are equipped with serene guestrooms.
