The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is not only a luxurious retreat, but is also a historically significant site, thanks to its renowned geothermal mineral springs. The natural geothermal activity in the region created mineral-rich springs that bubbled up from deep within the earth, offering a natural source of warmth and healing. Native Americans, primarily the Pomo, Miwok, and Wappo peoples who originally inhabited the Sonoma Valley, revered these hot springs for their therapeutic properties. Many tribes considered the area’s springs to be sacred and would travel for days to immerse themselves in the waters.
In 1895, Captain H.E. Boyes bought the land upon which the springs are located from Dr. T.M. Leavenworth, a New York transplant who worked as a physician and an Episcopalian minister. Boyes was a former officer in the British Royal Navy, who had immigrated to California following a stint running an indigo plantation in India. The captain knew of the mineral springs on the land and saw an opportunity to transform it into a health retreat. While drilling a well, he brought forth geothermal waters with a temperature of 112 degrees Fahrenheit. Recognizing the potential of these natural hot springs, Boyes established the Boyes Hot Springs and the Boyes Hot Springs Hotel in 1927.
The hotel quickly became a popular destination for those seeking the health benefits of mineral waters. Over the decades, the property underwent several transformations. It was rebuilt and expanded, eventually becoming The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. The resort has preserved its historic charm while incorporating modern amenities, making the resort a unique blend of the past and the present.
The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa reflects the tranquility and beauty of its surroundings, offering numerous ways for guests to rejuvenate, and boasts five naturally heated geothermal mineral pools, each offering a unique experience. The ancient thermal mineral spring, flowing from a depth of 1,100 feet below the resort, contains 27 different minerals, and has a surface temperature of 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Guests, or visitors using a day pass, can relax by the fireplace or in a private cabana with a stocked refrigerator, soak in the mineral baths and Watsu pool, or enjoy a signature spa treatment.
In 2022, The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa launched Club 1927, a luxury lifestyle membership community offering exclusive access to spa and wellness services, as well as world-class dining.
