Charleston is renowned for its ghost stories, many of which are tied to its historic buildings and streets. In the heart of the Charleston Historic District stands Mills House Charleston, Curio Collection by Hilton, a beacon of Southern charm and elegance since it opened in 1853. This grand hotel is close to Old Town, King Street, and some of Charleston’s most renowned historic sites and ghost tours.



The Mills House is not just a wonderful example of Renaissance Revival-style architecture; it is also steeped in local lore. Among the tales is that of a ghostly figure, a woman from the 19th century, who is said to appear in the rear lobby between the hours of 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. Dressed in a distinctive purple dress, she is believed to be haunting the place where she tragically passed away in The Great Charleston Fire of 1861.

In 1861, this devastating event was believed to be caused by an uncontrolled campfire at the start of the Civil War, and this event affected much of the city. The Mills House played a pivotal role in providing sanctuary for those affected. As the hotel was threatened, employees, residents, and guests banded together to save their beloved pink hotel. Amidst the chaos, many victims were brought to The Mills House for aid, and it is said that the woman in the purple dress was among those who passed away from their injuries.



Visitors today may find themselves in the presence of this gentle apparition, a silent witness to the past, as they explore the storied corridors of The Mills House, in addition to all that Charleston has to offer. Her presence is not one of malice, but of sorrow and remembrance. Guests who have encountered her describe a serene figure, gliding through the lobby. Her gaze is distant and mournful. She serves as a haunting reminder of the bravery and tragedy of that fateful night.
