Architect, Benjamin McDougall chose this style that blends the architectural styles of Mediterranean, Italian, and Spanish traditions with that of a distinct California style. Many of the original features, such as the grand chandelier in the hotel restaurant, remain at the hotel to this day.

Shattuck, the mayor of Berkely wanted to build a grand hotel in the city but died before he was able to facilitate. The idea lingered and eventually the grand hotel was built as the Hotel Shattuck Plaza and named in his honor.
