The Hotel Hacienda de Abajo, located in Tazacorte (La Palma), has won the award for best Historic Hotel in Europe, granted by the Historic Hotels Awards of Excellence 2021. The award was presented at a ceremony that took place at The American Club Resort Hotel (1918) in Kohler, Wisconsin.
The La Palma establishment has won over 16 other nominees who were opting for this award. The organization has highlighted that it is the European hotel that "best celebrates its history in the customer experience and provides exceptional hospitality and service."
The Hotel Hacienda de Abajo is the result of the careful rehabilitation of an old sugar plantation from the 17th century and has been recognized as the first emblematic hotel in the Canary Islands. The establishment is located in a group of buildings built by Jácome de Monteverdede in 1493 that were the center of commercial exchanges with Flanders, Andalusia and the West Indies. Today it stands out for its valuable artistic collections and its garden of botanical rarities.
