Fera Palace completes restoration of iconic copper dome in Salvador
By Antonio Dilson Neto
The Fera Palace Hotel , one of Salvador’s architectural icons, has completed the restoration of its iconic copper dome, located at the top of the building. The process, which took 18 days, was carried out by a specialized team and reaffirms the hotel’s commitment to preserving the city’s historical and cultural heritage.
The dome, originally from the old Palace Hotel, opened in 1934, is one of the trademarks of the Fera Palace and the urban landscape of Salvador. At night, its illuminated structure gives the hotel's rooftop a unique atmosphere, attracting attention and consolidating the place as a reference of sophistication.
Because it is in an elevated position, the restoration required extra care. Scaffolding was erected around the dome, and workers wore safety equipment to deal with the complexity of the task. During the process, activities such as polishing, removing stains, removing worn varnish and replacing panels damaged by time and weather conditions were carried out.
After sanding, it was discovered that some of the copper plates were severely damaged, with plastic mass on their surface. These elements required in-depth repairs, demonstrating the level of complexity involved in preserving this historical symbol.
