Three Historic Hotels of America® Members Receive New MICHELIN Guide “Keys”

WASHINGTON DC May 6, 2024 --------------- Three member hotels of Historic Hotels of America®, an official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, have received MICHELIN Guide’s Key distinction, a new recognition from the MICHELIN Guide that debuted in Spring 2024.

MICHELIN Guide announced the new MICHELIN Key in October 2023 and released its first listing of hotels in the United States on April 24, 2024.

“Just as the MICHELIN Star distinguishes those restaurants that are at the peak of their art, the MICHELIN Key recognizes the most exceptional hotels throughout the world. It is also an acknowledgment of the teamwork of committed enthusiastic hospitality professionals,” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide, in the October 2023 announcement of the new distinction.

Historic Hotels of America is the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation with the mission to increase the preservation, recognition, and celebration of the finest historic hotels. Founded in 1989 with 35 Charter Members, Historic Hotels of America membership today counts more than 300 historic hotels including independently owned and operated historic hotels as well as historic hotels representing more than 35 of the world’s finest hospitality brands, chains, and collections.

“Historic Hotels of America is pleased to see Cavallo Point, The Wall Street Hotel, and Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows recognized by a time-honored hospitality guide,” said Lawrence P. Horwitz, Executive Vice President of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide. We hope this recognition of iconic historic hotels will encourage further public interest in our nation’s historic treasures and their preservation.”

Out of 124 American hotels that received the MICHELIN Guide Key distinction this year, the following three Historic Hotels of America member hotels were selected.

Cavallo Point (1901) San Francisco, California

Located on the grounds of former Fort Baker in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and well-known for its sustainability practices, Cavallo Point is one of the best holiday destinations in the greater San Francisco area. Built in 1901, it was once a housing complex for soldiers. In 1995, Congress transferred the facility to the control of the National Park Service, making it a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In the early 21st century, a business group converted 13 of the historic military houses into a desirable vacation destination called “Cavallo Point.” Historic accommodations at Cavallo Point include 68 guestrooms and suites in historic lodgings, each featuring original crown molding, 10-foot punched-tin ceilings, cozy sitting areas, and windows that open to bring in fresh air off the Bay. The property also offers 74 contemporary guestrooms and suites that combine environmental sensitivity with modern style. Guests can enjoy private entry, gas fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and spectacular views of Golden Gate Bridge.

The Wall Street Hotel (1901) New York, New York

Nestled among the juxtaposition of cobblestones and skyscrapers in New York City’s financial district is The Wall Street Hotel. An iconic destination for business, art, and culture, there's never a dull moment in this vibrant city and The Wall Street Hotel is positioned as a homebase for any New York City itinerary. The building went up in 1921 to serve stockbrokers and other financial workers in Manhattan. Named the “Tontine Building,” the spectacular new skyscraper was an important cultural fixture in the Financial District for many decades, its tenants playing significant roles in the development of America’s rapidly modernizing monetary system In 2021, the Paspaleys  family acquired the Tontine Building and—eager to preserve this stunning and historic Beaux Arts high-rise—transformed it into The Wall Street Hotel. The hotel was inducted into Historic Hotels of America in 2023.

The Wall Street Hotel was recognized by Historic Hotels of America in 2023 for its culinary heritage of oysters, important to New York’s coastal cuisine and important to the family business that founded the hotel. Because pollution and overfishing have damaged the oyster population in recent decades and threatened this historic tradition, The Wall Street Hotel has partnered with the Billion Oyster Project.

Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows (1921) Santa Monica, California

Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows combines historic elegance with oceanfront luxury. Situated atop the scenic bluffs overlooking Santa Monica Beach, Fairmont Miramar is just a stone’s throw from many Southern California attractions, including Santa Monica Pier and 3rd Street Promenade—famous for its shopping, dining, live entertainment, weekly farmers market, and more to discover. The historic Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows was initially a private mansion owned by former United States Senator John Percival Jones, who helped found the city of Santa Monica during the 1800s. Opening to the public as the “Hotel Miramar” in 1921, it was the only beachside hotel in the area at the time with private bungalows and became popular with countless celebrities, politicians, and others wanting a secluded vacation. This trend began with actress Greta Garbo, who moved into the historic Palisades Wing for four years. Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows was inducted into Historic Hotels of America in 2018.
