Historic Hotels of America has released their 2021 list of the Top 25 Historic Hotels of America Most Haunted Hotels. Unsurprisingly, one of San Antonio's own has made the list: The Emily Morgan Hotel.
Built in 1924, various reports have claimed that the hotel, nestled adjacent to the Alamo, is possessed by an array of ghosts and spirits from back when the building was the Medical Art Building. The seventh, ninth, and fourteenth floors are where most of the paranormal sightings are said to happen.
Staff and guest experiences of strange occurrences are detailed on the hotel's website. Some claim to encounter the distinct smell of medical antiseptic populating the fourteenth floor (the hotel does not have a 13th floor, following a popular superstition). Others have experienced the sound of rickety hospital carts, doors opening and closing at random, unexplained phones ringing, and elevators stopping at floors for no reason. Some guests even claim to have seen apparitions of nurses. Video cameras have captured orbs — a term used by paranormal investigators to describe a strange light phenomena — floating around the hotel.
San Antonians already know the city is rich in history and alleged haunts. Other lodging spaces in the downtown San Antonio area professed to be haunted include The Menger Hotel and The St. Anthony Hotel.
The Historic Hotels of America list also includes popular destinations for traveling Texans. Just a road trip away is the haunted Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, allegedly filled with many spirits, including a sick child named Maurice. Also in Louisiana is the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center, supposedly haunted by iconic politician Huey P. Long. In Santa Fe, La Posada de Santa Fe, built in 1882, is said to be haunted by a Victorian specter.
