Visit the Telfair Museums, the oldest public art museum in the South. It was founded in 1883 through the bequest of prominent local philanthropist Mary Telfair, who left her home and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. Today, Telfair Museums consists of three unique buildings: the Telfair Academy and the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. Telfair Museums’ Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters and Telfair Academy 1818, designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. These two sites sit alongside the contemporary Jepson Center for the Arts. Each of the museum’s three buildings houses a collection corresponding to the era in which it was built, illustrating the continuum of art and history in Savannah.

Explore the SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah’s premier contemporary art museum. The museum is housed in an 1853 brick structure that was once a railway depot for the Central of Georgia Railway. This National Historic Landmark is the only surviving antebellum railroad complex in the United States. Today, the museum features emerging and established international artists through commissioned works and rotating exhibitions. Permanent collections include The Walter O. Evans collection of African American Art, The Modern and Contemporary Art Collection, The Earle W. Newton Collection of British and American Art, The 19th -and-20th-Century Photography Collection, and the SCAD Costume Collection.
